{Review} Lunch @ The Edge Delicatessen

Sunny skies, cool breezes, itchy eyes and an ever sneezing nose. Spring is well ad truly upon us. It would be sinning to not visit one of the many pretty beaches in Adelaide when the weather is so perfect. Unlike Glenelg, where I usually have to rake my brains to decide on an eatery, Brighton is easy. There’s only a handful of eating places along Jetty Road and I can easily hone in on two great ones that are pretty much failsafe.

Greeting us at the narrow entrance to Edge Delicatessen was a chalkboard of the day’s impressive lunch specials. The display counter fashioned from an old bakery fridge exhibited various luscious-looking cakes and there was another laden with tempting salads and slices. One of the lunch specials was the roasted vegetable frittata. Usually served with tossed salad, a smart cookie swapped it for another with potatoes, broccolini and sprouts. Absolutely delish. The frittata was laden with sweet pumpkin. The sour cream and sweet chili garnish provided a great finish to the dish, albeit tipping it towards the rich side.

Another item off the lunch menu was the smoked salmon polenta cakes with tossed salad. Never too keen on polenta, I wasn’t so sure about this one though the salmon sitting atop the polenta cakes were thick and plentiful. One taste of these little canape-like combinations proved that my polenta aversion was misplaced. The salmon provided much-needed flavour for the bland yellow patties and the cold combination actually worked pretty well. Proves that smoked salmon tastes good on almost everything.

And here’s my lunch. Smoked ham, tomatoes, lettuce and generous slabs of boccocini sandwiched between crusty toasted focaccia. A pretty decent meal if you ask me. We declined coffee orders but I have had some here before and they were good so the drinks department is settled.

We followed-up the lunch with three hours of walking along the beach all the way from Brighton to Seacliff, then up the hill to the lookout point, then cutting across the suburbs while checking out the huge houses and auction boards. A good day indeed.
